SHAH ALAM, Nov 3 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will meet all the Cabinet ministers on Friday to gauge the performance of their respective ministries based on the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and National Key Result Areas (NKRA).
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said it was in line with the firm commitment of the Prime Minister to change the quality of life of the people in the country by raising the effectiveness of the government since assuming the premiership in April.
"We can't play around, (we) must be serious. We want to prove that no matter what the situation is, the Barisan Nasional (BN) is a party that is more credible, capable in resolving (the problems of the people) and helping to champion the cause of the people. Look at what is happening with the opposition, becoming more chaotic," he said at a gathering with the Deputy Prime Minister at the Senior Citizens' Club, here.
The six thrusts of the NKRA involves efforts at reducing the crime rate; fighting corruption; widening access to quality and affordable education; raising the standard of living of the lower-income group; improving infrastructure in the rural and remote areas; and improving public transport in the medium-term.
Muhyiddin, who is also the Education Minister, said among the issues involving his ministry was that only 67 per cent of children enjoyed pre-school education, while the remaining 33 per cent were not listed because of various problems including the problems of infrastructure and poverty.
"We will look into this and try to raise the precentage to 87 per cent within the next two years. In addition, incentives will also be given to the private sector to develop pre-school infrastructure," he said.
Muhyiddin also said that in the near future, he would announce the list of high-performance schools throughout the country.
He said that with the listing of these schools, the government would ensure that not only the rich would enrol in the schools, it would also be open to the poor who had achieved good performance in education.
Meanwhile, Muhyiddin, who is also the Barisan Nasional (BN) deputy chairman, said that since the BN's victory in the Bagan Pinang by-election recently, there was growing public acceptance for the BN due to the 1Malaysia concept mooted by the Prime Minister.
"I feel what was most obvious in the BN victory during the by-election was the public acceptance for the 1Malaysia concept. It is obvious that we are now in the midst of change and that the party is determined to bring the changes it had promised," he said.
He also called on the BN component parties to carry out the process of rehabilitation as was being done by Umno.
"If there are problems, resolve them immediately and don't delay. We don't have time any more," he added.
