| Two Incinerators May Be Built In Melaka And Johor: Lajim Ukin |

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 3 (Bernama) -- The government is considering building two incinerators in Melaka and Johor to alleviate dependence on 178 garbage dumps now.
Deputy Minister for Housing and Local Government, Datuk Seri Lajim Ukin, said that the project planned for under the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP) was at the cost determination stage before being forwarded to the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) for approval.
"Now there are 178 sold waste garbage dumps in the country but there are no incinerators for solid waste disposal.
"The ministry is doing a study about the cost involved. When the proposal paper is ready it will be sumitted to the EPU for follow-up. For a start we will build in Melaka," he told reporters at the Parliament lobby here Tuesday.
He said this when asked about the the number of garbage and solid waste dumps under local government authorities and the number of incinerators operating now.
Lajim said further developments on the proposal will be decided on after a ministerial meeting on Nov 5.
According to him, the incinerators could reduce the solid waste collected at garbage dump sites as the country was expected to put out about 30,000 tonnes of solid waster by 2020.
Last year, the Housing and Local Government Minister then, Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan, when winding up the 2009 Supply Bill debate for his ministry said works on implementing incinerator projects were put on hold so that more study could be done about operating costs and suitable incinerators.
The postponement was also to provide time for ministry staff to strengthen their capabilities to operate the incinerators.
Lajim said the ministry was now building five mini-incinerators on Pulau Tioman, Pulau Langkawi, Pulau Pangkor, Pulau Labuan and in Cameron Highlands.
