KUCHING, Nov 4 (Bernama) -- Sarawak wants the federal goverment to find a solution to the bumiputera status of children of marriages involving Bumiputera and non-Bumiputera in the state.
Vowing to solve the problem, Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Alfred Jabu has sent a letter to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak for his perusal.
Jabu said the letter was a follow-up to the issue involving top SMK Simanggang science stream student Marina Undau whose application to undergo university matriculation was turned down by the education ministry as she was deemded not a 'bumiputra' based on the Federal Constitution interpretation.
The 18-year-old scored 9As and 1B in last year's SPM examination.
Refusing to go into details, Jabu said the contents of the letter contained among others, "recommendations to consider areas not addressed", with regard to the issue of the status of children of mixed parentage.
While there has been no reply yet from Najib, Jabu said he was confident an amicable solution would be in line with the 1Malaysia concept.
"I believe the prime minister will be able to solve the problem," he told reporters after performing an earth-breaking ceremony for the construction of the RM220 million 'City One' shopping mall developed by Kuching-based company, Standard Parade Sdn Bhd, here on Wednesday.
Born to an Iban father and a Chinese mother, Undau's plight was reported by the media when the ministry stated she was categorised a non-Bumiputera, via a letter to her father in the middle of this year.
Under the Federal Constitution Article 161A(6)(b), if the father and mother are natives of Sarawak, the child is considered bumiputera.
For Peninsula, in Article 160 (2) of the Federal Constitution, a child is considered bumiputera if either parent is a Malay who is Muslim/Orang Asli, while in Sabah. under Article161A(6)(a) of the constitution, if the father is a Malay who is Muslim/native of Sabah, the child is considered bumiputera.
