12 Receive Yang di-Pertuan Agong Scholarship

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 4 (Bernama) -- Twelve candidates received the Yang di-Pertuan Agong 2009 Scholarship at the Istana Negara here on Wednesday.

Six of them will pursue Ph.Ds in the United Kingdom while six more will do masters degrees in the United Kingdom and Australia.

Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin presented the scholarships to the recipients.

The scholarship entails a subsistence allowance, which is 50 per cent higher than that of the Federal Scholarship.

Managed by the Public Service Department, the scholarship holders will not be bonded but will be required to return to the country after their studies and work either in the public or private sectors.

Among the scholarship holders is Syahida Zainudin, 26, from Kuala Lumpur, who is pursuing a doctorate at the University College London Centre for Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis.

Sofiyah Nordin, 23, from Kedah will pursue a masters degree in Molecular Biology at Queensland University.
