PWD Draughtsmen To Pioneer Home Working Programme

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 4 (Bernama) -- Come Jan 1, a pioneer batch of draughtsmen from the Public Works Department (PWD) will work from home.

The 35 draughtsmen, who will be on probation, will kick-start the three-month Home Working Programme to enable the government to gauge its effectiveness.

Whether the government decides to continue with the programme or not, would depend on its success, said Works Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor, who disclosed that the programme was mooted by the prime minister.

"This is part of the government's efforts in its drive to make the country, a fully-developed nation. I believe the programme will benefit, not only the government, but also the workers themselves.

"The pioneer programme will be implemented from Jan 1 to March-end. However, if the workers fail to increase their productivity, the programme will be called off," he told a press conference at the Parliament lobby here Wednesday.

On the other hand, if the programme became a success, Shaziman said, it would help the government, especially the ministry, to tackle congestion at the workplace.

Inadvertently, he said, the programme, would also alleviate the burden of the workers, in terms of cost of petrol and toll, besides allowing them to spend more time with their families.

He said such a programme had been implemented by many popular companies worldwide and had proven successful, in increasing the productivity of companies.

"That is why, the prime minister gave his consent for the PWD to pioneer this programme to allow the workers to work from home," he said, adding that the draughtsmen were chosen because their work required them to spend most of their time with computers.
