Leaders' Wives Must Also Be Close To The People - Rosmah

SHAH ALAM, Nov 4 (Bernama) -- In view of the current political developments and the maturity of the people who are also voters, the wives of elected representatives should complement their husband's role by getting closer to the people, said the Prime Minister's wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Wednesday.

She said this was most important especially in the states where the government was led by the opposition coalition such as in Selangor.

"Through people-oriented programmes, we can forge closer relations between the people and the leaders and their wives. The cordial relations will build up the people's trust in and love for the leaders.

"Hopefully, in this manner we can regain the people's trust and support for the Barisan Nasional (BN)," she said at the opening of the inaugural general meeting of Selangor 'Badan Amal dan Kasih' (Kasih), here.

Also present were Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Noh Omar and his wife, Professor Datin Seri Dr Aishah Salleh, who is also the deputy president of Kasih.

Commenting on Kasih, Rosmah, who is also the organisation's president, hoped that the formation of the charity organisation on Sept 5 would create continuity between the wives of the current elected representatives and those who had retired in Selangor to provide service to the people in the state.

"As we all know, women represent half of the voters in any constituency and their loyalty to the BN candidates had contributed to the BN victory.

"In this context, Kasih members must play their respective role especially in getting closer to the women folks through the Kasih programmes and activities to garner as much support for the BN from the women," she said.

The Prime Minister's wife said Kasih also needed to implement programmes and activities which were people-friendly and in line with the 1Malaysia concept such as getting down on the ground to meet members of the public and to hand out donations to the needy.

"When there is a tragedy, we, as the wives of elected representatives, need not wait for our husbands to go to the scene. Our husbands may be busy attending meetings and may be delayed, so we don't have to wait for them and instead we should go immediately to visit the people who are in difficulty and offer aid and donation," she added.
