Study Needed On Raising Allowance Of "Tuai Rumah": Jabu

KUCHING, Nov 6 (Bernama) -- Any proposal to raise the allowance for the 'tuai rumah' or longhouse headman needs to be studied from aspects of the burden of their duties and current needs, said Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Alfred Jabu. Jabu, who is also the state Rural Development Minister, said the matter needed to be discussed in a special committee besides being referred to the state secretary. "The proposal to raise the allowance from RM450 a month will be discussed at the coming state assembly sitting," he told reporters after officiating the 2009 Student Excellence Awards at SMK St. Augustine, Betong yesterday. Jabu was asked to comment on the matter as the poverty line now was set as below RM500 and that included the headmen who only depended on their allowances. Earlier, he said the government always placed importance on communities' education in rural areas and called on students to make the 'DIDIK' concept of education, smartness, discipline, integrity and knowledge a guide to enable them to be competitive in grabbing job opportunities in both the public and private sectors. -- BERNAMA
