Singapore Concerned Over Thailand-Cambodia Conflict

SINGAPORE, Nov 6 (Bernama) -- Singapore is concerned about the deteriorating relationship between Thailand and Cambodia, two of the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean).

"It is not good for Asean," the republic's Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a statement today following the latest developments in Thailand-Cambodia relations.

The two neighbouring nations are now in a diplomatic row following the appointment of fugitive former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra as economic advisor to Prime Minister Hun Sen and the Cambodian government early this week.

Thaksin is still on the run from the Thai laws for corruption charges, and Cambodia was reported to have said that Thaksin would not be extradited to Thailand he if set foot on Cambodian soil.

The two countries also have yet to settle their outstanding land dispute surrounding the ancient temple of Preah Vihear at their common border which had resulted in deadly clashes between both their armies.

The land dispute was further escalated when Unesco approved Cambodia's application to have the temple complex named a World Heritage Site last year.

Singapore said it hoped that both nations would keep the larger interest of Asean in mind and "find a way to resolve their differences quickly in a spirit of good neighbourliness."
