Kuala Langat Sanitary Landfill To Begin Operations Jan 1

KUALA LANGAT, Nov 6 (Bernama) -- The first two cells of the Tanjung Dua Belas Solid Waste Sanitary Landfill here will begin operations on Jan 1 next year and will reduce the problem of waste dumping affecting residents in the areas of Sepang, Kajang, Putrajaya and here.

The chairman of the Selangor permanent committee for Islamic Affairs, Malay Culture, Infrastructure and Public Amenities, Datuk Dr Hasan Ali, said the sanitary landfill site had an area of 6.4ha and cost about RM50 million and could take in about eight tonnes of waste overall.

He said as soon as the landfill started operating, the waste sites at Ampar Tenang, Sepang, and Sungai Sedu will be closed.

"We have had complaints from residents in Kuala Langat and Sepang...we hope they are patient until the the cells start operation on Jan 1," he told reporters here today.

Dr Hasan said this after visiting the landfill site being put up by Worldwide Holdings Bhd, a property and utilities company.

Worldwide Holdings head of its environment division, Zamri Abdul Rahman, said operation of the first two cells over 0.4ha could take in about 400 tonnes of waste a day.

"The landfill that can last for about 25 years is a phased construction. This landfill places importance on environment safety, ground water base, leachate treatment and gases...has compressor machines and qualified engineers," he said.

Zamri said Tanjung Dua Belas was picked as the location as it was located away from residential areas, that is about five kilometres, was away from water catchment areas and was strategically located to receive waste from Banting and Sepang.

He said construction was started by the Public Works Department in May by building an approach road after getting an environmental impact assessment (EIA) report on Sept 17 last year.

The landfill is the third to be handled by Worldwide Holdings after the Air Hitam, Puchong one that has been closed and the one in Jeram, Kuala Selangor that has been operating for two years.
