| 17 7-Eleven Stores In Shah Alam Stop Selling Alcoholic Drinks |

SHAH ALAM, Nov 6 (Bernama) -- Seventeen of the 39 7-eleven convenience stores here have stopped selling alcoholic drinks as there is no demand for the drinks in Muslim-majority areas.
Shah Alam Mayor Mazalan Md. Noor said the 17 stores were located in Section 1 to 24.
"Since the Menteri Besar (Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim) issued a directive to control the sale of alcoholic drinks through self-regulatory, the stores have been proactive by not selling such drinks in the Muslim-majority areas," he told a press conference Friday.
Mazalan had earlier handed out stickers, leaflets and posters to the operators of three convenience stores in Section 9 here on self-regulating the sale of alcoholic drinks.
The move by the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) is in line with the directive issued by Khalid for shop owners or operators to self-regulate the sale of drinks with less than 8.8 per cent alcohol content to avoid action by MBSA.
Mazalan said with the new move, the store operators should also be more careful about their customers in that they should only sell alcoholic drinks to non-Muslims aged 18 years and above.
He said they should also separate the alcoholic drinks from the other canned or bottled drinks, maintain a record book on customers whose religion they were unsure of, display their business licence at all times, have a separate payment counter for alcoholic drinks (at supermarkets only) and forbid the consumption of alcoholic drinks at their premises.
"If the store owners or operators do not adhere to the rules, we will call them and explain their offences. If they still do not heed, then only will we take action like not renewing their trading licence," he added.
