KUANTAN, Nov 6 (Bernama) -- A member of a car theft syndicate was seriously injured in a shoot-out with police in Jalan Pintasan-Kuantan Port here, early Friday.
Kuantan CID chief DSP Kamaruzzaman Jaafar said in the 4.15am incident, police became suspicious of a Proton Putra car with heavily tinted glass parked near a petrol station.
"But before the police had the chance to check out the car, the driver sped off, prompting the police to give chase.
"To stop the police from pursuing them, the suspects were believed to have thrown thumb nails onto the road and fired two shots at the police," he told reporters here Friday.
At that point, he said, the police were forced to return fire.
"The suspects, however, managed to drive the car to Kampung Budaya, Cherating, about 30km away before leaving the machine in a bush near the village," he said.
Following a search with the help of villagers, a man with a gunshot wound was found near the area at 1pm.
He said the 29-year-old man from Pasir Puteh, Kelantan, who sustained severe shoulder injury was taken to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital.
Police also found various car-theft tools as well as a machete, handcuff, fake car registration plates and a luggage in the car.
It is believed that the man was not alone in the shoot-out and police are tracking down his accomplice.
