KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 2 (Bernama) -- Breast augmentation is increasingly gaining acceptance among women in Asia as the techniques used are increasingly simpler and very much safer than before.
Now in 20 mins a competent plastic surgeon can augment a bosom depending on surgical technique, and in 24-48 hours the patient can get back to work.
Renowned Swedish plastic surgeon Dr Charles Randquist speaking from Victoriakliniken, Stockholm via Skype said breast augmentation is something that lots of women in Asia desire at present "because it is all about quality of life'.
"Modern women today don't want to feel that they are missing out. Natural proportional looking breast is closely related to femininity and something that may be part of self-esteem and thereby confidence in many aspects. Therefore, due to safe and predictable long-term results, more women seek this procedure as part of feeling well."
BE REALISTIC
Nevertheless, he cautioned saying "I want to be perfectly clear, that although this may play a role in well being, in no way should this be considered as a solution for other problems, and patients should always be realistic in their expectations."
Dr Randquist who is hosting the first Asian Breast Aesthetic Symposium (ABAS) in collaboration with Malaysian partners at the Gleneagles Hospital here this week, added that while many women may contemplate breast augmentation, it is important to understand the risks involved.
So it is important for the surgeons to talk to the patients not only on the options but also the risks.
Dr Randquist who has conducted breast augmentation workshops all around the world, noted that with breast augmentation and cosmetic surgery gaining greater acceptance in the increasingly affluent Asian society, there is a need to follow golden standards in the profession.
"If everything that we do is just based on producing quantity, not quality and we believe that we have no problems as long as our patients are happy, then we are kidding ourselves.
The surgical golden rule is to be honest with oneself, and with one's patients results, short and long-term complications.
For instance, not every patient should have surgery. And the doctor should advise accordingly.
"If patients have unrealistic expectations, or if you feel that you will not be doing something good for the patient you should not perform surgery on the patient. You have to turn her down. But if they should decide to have surgery, this surgery should be based on good and safe surgical principles using scientific evaluated devises/implants that have lifetime guarantees!"
ABOUT ABAS
'While Asia has many breast surgeons it is unfortunate that it lacks scientific data or numbers on breast augmentation.
"This is why I chose to organise the ABAS in Asia with Malaysia playing host because I want to share my and some of my colleagues knowledge with my Asian counterparts and to gather tools to bring down the trauma and complication rates.
"For me this nonindustrial, nonpolitical, nonprofit symposium is a way to reach out to the bigger audience, meet more key opinion leaders, and thereby more surgeons for the benefit of our patients"
Regarding ABAS, Dr Randquist said that the 60 over plastic surgeons participating in the inaugural event are opinion leaders back in their own countries and they will bring lots of knowledge to Malaysia and would put Kuala Lumpur on the map when it comes to the future of breast augmentation and cosmetic surgery.
"Malaysia will be able to show its quality of medicine and the technical know-how. I know this first ABAS, from a scientific standpoint, will be fantastic".
