RLIR 2010 Attracts Steady Flow Of Local, Foreign Entries

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 5 (Bernama) -- The annual Royal Langkawi International Regatta (RLIR 2010) has been receiving a steady flow of entries from local and foreign participants.

RLIR 2010 Race Committee Chairman Ahmad Zailani Bashah said more than 35 teams are expected to participate in next year's regatta.

"Entries have started coming in since June this year and we expect participation to increase by November and December," he said in a statement here Thursday.

Ahmad said the race committee was expecting more entries in the IRC class and hopes the Firefly One design catamaran will make a comeback in the regatta.

On the route, he said the secretariat would maintain the round-the-island race introduced last year, due to its popularity among participants.

"Apart from the usual windward or leeward courses, new and challenging courses are also being designed for RLIR 2010," Ahmad said.

RLIR 2010, the eighth regatta organised by the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club since 2003, is scheduled from Jan 8-15.

Already part of the Asian Regatta Calendar, RLIR 2010 has for the last several years been drawing regular boats as well as new participants who actively race in regional circuits.

Participating teams will compete for the 'Prime Minister's Challenge Trophy' (for internationally registered yachts), 'LADA-IRC Challenge Trophy' (for IRC Class), 'Langkawi Sports Trophy' (for Sports Boat Class), 'Malaysian Multihull Challenge Cup' (for Multihull category) and 'Commodore's Challenge Cup' (for club-registered cruisers).
