MITI LAUDS PERAK'S EFFORTS TO BOOST ITS ECONOMY

09/07/2019 07:18 PM

IPOH, July 9  (Bernama) -- The Perak state government’s extra efforts to boost its economy including setting up a special committee to resolve issues of squatters occupying government land which has affected investment are showing positive results, said International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Darell Leiking.

He said the state government’s willingness to go the extra mile to bring in investments was commendable as the efforts it took had further eased investments and businesses activities in Perak.

“Every state has its own set of problems and in the case of Perak, it’s squatters issue but the problem is now resolved with the establishment of the committee,” he told a press conference after a meeting with Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu here today.

The special committee was established in January this year, chaired by Ahmad Faizal while its members included district officers and representatives of the government agencies and the government-linked companies.

Meanwhile, Darell said the state had posted an increase of almost four per cent in trade to RM5 billion in the first quarter of this year compared with RM4.78 billion a year ago.

He said Perak had recorded RM1.83 billion in exports for the period of January to April of this year, while imports were valued at RM3.18 billion.

As for approved investments during the same period, Darell said a total of RM1.43 billion was approved for the manufacturing sector while RM56.3 million for the services sector.

The ministry would continue to assist Perak to bring in more investments, he added.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Faizal explained the committee's role was to help potential investors negotiate with the squatters to vacate the land.

He cited Khantan as one of the areas that were currently eyed by potential investors.

The committee had started the negotiations with the squatters and some of them had moved out from the area, he said, adding that under the previous state government, the potential investors had to undertake the negotiations by themselves.
