GEORGE TOWN, Feb 11 (Bernama) -- The police have identified six anglers who were reported missing after they failed to return home from a fishing trip in waters off Penang yesterday morning.

Seberang Perai Selatan district police chief Supt Shafee Abdul Samad today said the missing men were identified as the boat skipper Mohd Khairul Anuar Mohd Salleh, 30, Mohd Azmil Abdul Rahman, 31, Mohd Faiz Ibrahim, 30, Lee Chee Sen, 49, Mohd Rajid Jamil, 35, and Khairil Hafidzi Tajudin, 31.

“Mohd Khairul Anuar, from Nibong Tebal, always brings other anglers with him using his fibreglass boat for fishing trips around Penang waters,” he said, adding that the anglers’ family members had been notified about the incident.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has activated the search and rescue operations (SAR) to locate the missing anglers.

Penang MMEA director Hamizan Harun said today that the SAR operation was activated following a police report lodged by the brother of one of the anglers who went out to the sea for fishing trip from Tanjung Berembang Jetty, Nibong Tebal, about 8am yesterday.

Hamizan also urged fishermen who have any information on the missing boat and six anglers to contact 999 or Penang Maritime Operations Centre at 04-2626146.

Thus far, a helicopter belonging to MMEA, as well as five boats from the Marine Police Force, MMEA and the Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM) had been deployed around the area to locate the missing boat and anglers on board.
