KUALA LUMPUR, July 10 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will be given guest country status at the Beijing International Book Fair (BIBF) in 2021, in line with the government’s commitment to strengthen the book industry in the country.
According to a statement by the Malaysian Education Ministry tonight, this initiative was reached at talks between Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik and deputy president of BIBF Committee, Lin Liying, in Beijing, China, yesterday.
BIBF is one of the biggest international book fairs, gathering scores of countries. BIBF is also an excellent platform for Malaysia to market and internationalise its best works.
"Our country has produced many quality works in various fields, including books by National Laureates, which can be marketed at the international level,” Maszlee said in the statement.
The initiative is also part of the ministry’s effort to make Malaysia a reading nation by 2030.
This year, Malaysia through Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, the Malaysian Institute of Translation and Books, and Kota Buku will participate in BIBF from Aug 21 to 25.
