SERI ISKANDAR, July 20 (Bernama) -- Petronas has sponsored about 36,000 outstanding Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) achievers to pursue studies locally and abroad, involving an allocation of RM3.3 billion under its Petronas Education Sponsorship Programme (PESP) since 1975, according to a senior Petronas official.
Its senior vice-president of group human resource management, Datuk Raiha Azni Abd Rahman, said this year alone, 400 students with outstanding SPM results had been selected for the programme, involving RM156 million.
She said the 400 students were among 7,000 students who had applied for the PESP sponsorship.
PESP is part of Petronas’ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts on education, she told reporters after the presentation of PESP sponsorship to students by Petronas president and group chief executive officer Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin at Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) here today.
The PESP recipients can opt to further their studies at UTP or abroad, like in Australia, Canada, China, the United States and the United Kingdom, she added.
One of the recipients, Muhamad Hakimi Zulkifli, 18, from Kelantan and who is pursuing his studies in chemical engineering in the United Kingdom, expressed his gratitude to Petronas for offering him the sponsorship.
Given his family background, he said, it would not be possible for him to study abroad if there was no scholarship.
