OIC condemns Netanyahu's annexation plan, calls for emergency conference

Last update: 12/09/2019
JEDDAH, Sept 12 -- The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) will be holding an extraordinary meeting of its member countries at the foreign ministers' level on Sunday over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's annexation statement, reported the Union of OIC News Agencies (UNA-OIC).

The meeting, to be held at the OIC headquarters in Jeddah at the request of Saudi Arabia, was called following Netanyahu's statement “to impose Israeli sovereignty on all the regions of the Jordan Valley, the Northern Dead Sea, and the settlements in the West Bank” if he is re-elected on September 17.

The meeting is also expected to address the immediate steps to be made through diplomacy and legal channels in response to Israel's aggressive stance.

OIC secretary-general Dr Yousef Al-Othaimeen criticised Netanyahu's statement which he described as unlawful and would stifle international efforts to establish long-term peace and achieve a two-state solution.

In the meantime, he also called on all countries and international organisations to reject and condemn Israel's provocation and to compel Israel to stop all its unilateral actions that are contrary to international law and United Nations’ (UN) resolutions.

According to Al-Othaimeen, OIC member states should stand firm on the right of Palestinians to reclaim their country based on the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital under international law and the Arab Peace Initiative.
