KUALA PILAH, Jan 14 -- The Yang diPertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Munawir has urged the people to look for similarities among themselves in order to create a lasting unity and harmony.

He also called on the people to reject all elements that could disrupt peace and harmony.

“In fact, it was not easy to achieve the sovereignty of the country. Appreciation should be given to all national fighters and security forces personnel who had fought for the nation's peace and sovereignty.

“People are now capable of thinking rationally and learning a lesson from the endless armed conflict, and bloodshed taking place in other countries,” he said at the investiture ceremony in conjunction with his 72nd birthday at Balai Rong Seri, Istana Besar Seri Menanti near here today.

Also present was the Tunku Ampuan Besar of Negri Sembilan Tuanku Aishah Rohani Almarhum Tengku Besar Mahmud.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun and wife of Datin Seri Wan Hasni Wan Yusof and state secretary Datuk Dr Razali Ab Malik also attended the ceremony.

Tuanku Muhriz also reminded the people to be careful and not get carried away with what they were fighting for to the extent of ignoring the good values and sensitivity of other races.

“One of the keys to maintaining unity and harmony is to provide early exposure to the younger generation. Many types of activities and programmes can be participated by the younger generation of various races to encourage cooperation and communications among them such as through sports and co-curriculum activities.

“I believe that such early exposure can encourage young people to live together, nurture friendships among people of other races and religions,” he said.

Tuanku Muhriz also touched on the need for the people to understand the practices and culture of other races in the country.

Meanwhile, Tuanku Muhriz reminded the state government leadership and administration to always strive towards achieving good and effective governance.

“I’m also pleased to see the development and strengthening of the administrative system at the local government level. In 2019, I officiated the declaration of the Jempol Municipal Council.

"Going into 2020, we achieved another milestone namely the merger of the Nilai Municipal Council and the Seremban Municipal Council to become Seremban City Council,” he said.

Tuanku Muhriz also congratulated the state government for successfully recording a total revenue of RM556 million in 2019, surpassing the target of RM430 million.

“I believe that this achievement is an outcome of the dedication and efficiency of all agencies in the state. The state government's ongoing efforts for the well-being of the people are clearly translated into the Ninth Budget for the year 2020 with the theme ‘Sustaining the Economy, Prospering the Rakyat’," he said.

At the ceremony, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia board chairman Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar headed the list of 444 recipients of awards and medals, receiving the Darjah Seri Setia Negeri Sembilan Yang Amat Cemerlang (SSNS) award which carries the ‘Datuk Seri’ title.

Also receiving the award was director of the International Science Council Regional Office For Asia and the Pacific, Prof. Emeritus Datuk Dr Mazlan Othman.
