KUALA LUMPUR, April 18 (Bernama) -- The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has officially kicked off the call for nominations for the prestigious ASEAN Prize 2024.

Now in its seventh year, the ASEAN Prize annually celebrates remarkable individuals and organisations within ASEAN for their invaluable contributions to regional community-building efforts.

Established to honour those who have shown exceptional commitment and accomplishments in enhancing ASEAN's resilience and integration, the recipient will be bestowed with a distinctive trophy and a monetary prize of US$20,000 sponsored by the Temasek Foundation of Singapore.

Eligible individuals and organisations within ASEAN are encouraged to submit their applications detailing their achievements that align with the following categories:

  • Outstanding collaboration among ASEAN Member States (AMSs)
  • Exceptional collaboration between ASEAN and the global community
  • Outstanding people-to-people engagement within AMSs
  • Exceptional economic integration and promotion of standards among AMSs
  • Other remarkable contributions to ASEAN Community Building

The ASEAN Prize serves as a testament to the region's commitment to recognising those who have significantly contributed to fostering regional integration and shaping a resilient ASEAN identity.

The call for nominations is open from March 1 to May 31, 2024, and submissions should be channelled through the National Focal Points of the respective ASEAN Member States.

Applicants are required to complete the ASEAN Prize 2024 nomination form available at https://asean.org/asean-prize, providing comprehensive information about the nominee's achievements and future initiatives, supporting documents and a character reference. Self-nominations and posthumous submissions will not be considered.

The Judging Committee Meeting for the ASEAN Prize will be chaired by the Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr Kao Kim Hourn.

The esteemed panel of judges includes former and current Secretaries-General of ASEAN, who will diligently assess the nominations to select this year's deserving recipient with the trophy and monetary prize presented during a significant ASEAN event this year under Laos ASEAN Chairmanship.

Since its inception in 2018, the ASEAN Prize has honoured four individuals and two organisations for their outstanding contributions.

Last year, Nguyen Thi Tuyet Minh, a passionate advocate for women's socio-economic empowerment from Vietnam, was celebrated for her unwavering dedication to fostering an inclusive and sustainable economy within the ASEAN Community.

During the opening ceremony of the 43rd ASEAN Summit in Jakarta, Indonesian President Joko Widodo proudly presented the ASEAN Prize trophy to Nguyen Thi Tuyet Minh, alongside the 2022 ASEAN Prize Recipient, Muhammad Iqbal Damit of Brunei. Tan Sri Dr Jemilah Mahmood is the first Malaysian to be bestowed with the award in 2019.
