PONTIAN, Oct 10 -- The project to upgrade three fishermen’s jetties in the Tanjung Piai parliamentary constituency, for which the allocation was recently approved, is expected to start next year.
State Islamic Religious Affairs, Agriculture and Rural Development Committee chairman, Tosrin Jarvanthi said the upgrading involved the Parit Penghulu and Sungai Boh Fishermen’s Jetties, both in the Serkat sub-district, and Jeram Batu Fishermen's Jetty in Pekan Nanas.
The upgrading works include the construction of a pedestrian walkway, security building, surau, workshop and eateries at the sites.
“We (Pakatan Harapan government) are keeping our promises to care for the fate and interests of fishermen across the country including in the Tanjung Piai area,” he said when met at the Parit Penghulu Fishermen’s Jetty, here.
He said the tender for the project, to be supervised by the Drainage and Irrigation Department, would be issued by the year-end.
“We expect the upgrading works to take six months to complete and more than 300 fishermen to benefit from the project,” he added in response to claims by certain quarters that the PH government did not fulfil its promises, the video of which has gone viral.
He said the project was among those championed by the incumbent MP for Tanjung Piai, Datuk Dr Md Farid Md Rafik, who passed away on Sept 21 from heart complications.
