10,514 dogs vaccinated in Sarawak

Last Update: 09/05/2019

KUCHING, May 9 (Bernama) -- Action has been taken on 4,350 stray dogs for ‘targeted removal’ and 10,514 dogs (pets) given rabies vaccination.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said as of May 3, phase one to three of the Rabies special operation for the districts of Lundu, Bau, Padawan, Samarahan and Kuching City have been carried out.

“The total number of dogs vaccinated for rabies in Sarawak is 120,353 or 57 per cent of an estimate of 210,000 while the cumulative cases of dog bite from July 1, 2017 to May 3, 2019 is 25,593,” he said in his winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly here today.

Uggah who is also state Agricultural Modernisation, Customary Land and Regional Development Minister, said Sarawak’s crime index rose by 1.05 per cent or 20 cases in the first quarter of this year, compared to the same period in 2018.

“Violent crimes showed a drop of 8.88 per cent (272 cases) but property crime showed an increase of three per cent or 47 cases which was contributed by house break-in and theft cases.

“Although there was a rise in the crime index and property crime, overall, Sarawak is safe and security is under control,” he said.

Meanwhile, Uggah said maritime security remained a concern for the government in view of incidents in which local fishermen were obstructed by foreign countries from fishing in Sarawak’s own waters.

He said encroachment by foreign fishermen was also being monitored and taken action by the relevant authorities.
