KUANTAN, May 25 (Bernama) -- This year's Aidilfitri celebration will be extra cheerful for Mohd Shahidam Mohamad Shahrim, 12, a muscular dystrophy patient who received a new set of Raya clothes through an initiative by the Kuantan MP's office.
Mohd Shahidam's mother, Shahida Mohd Noor, 43, who is the family's sole breadwinner said the assistance helped reduce expenses ahead of the celebration, and that the money saved could be used for more urgent matters.
"I make a living selling traditional cakes. The priority is definitely Shahidam's schooling and medical expenses, apart from a special milk formula for my son which is required for daily consumption.
"We are grateful as we receive RM350 for Shahidam from the Social Welfare Department every month. Alhamdulillah, today Shahidam received a new pair of Raya clothes," she told Bernama when met at the handover ceremony held at a supermarket here today, which was attended by Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Fuziah Salleh, who is also Kuantan MP.
Also present were Universiti Malaysia Pahang's Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Prof Datuk Yusserie Zainuddin and Pahang Ikram association president Suhaimi Mohd Aripin, whose organisations also helped with the project.
Fuziah said a total of 110 underprivileged individuals aged between five and 17 in Kuantan received an RM100 voucher each to be used at the supermarket.
She added that her office was working to help more people from the target group.
"We are working to raise funds with the cooperation of several non-governmental organisations (NGOs) who wish to be involved, and hopefully more will come forward to help out," she said.
