Penang MAQIS seizes 266 ornamental fish

Last Update: 01/06/2019

GEORGE TOWN, June 1 (Bernama) --  The Penang branch of the Department of Quarantine and Inspection Services (MAQIS) seized 266 salt water ornamental fishes at the Second Cargo Complex of the Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas near here on Thursday.

State MAQIS director Zarina Ramli said the seizure followed surveillance carried out by MAQIS's internal operating unit, which successfully uncovered the smuggling of such fish.

"We found that a company had imported ornamental fish but did not have or apply for any legal documents such as import permits from us. In other words, the company was trying to smuggle in the fish," she said in a statement here tonight.

She said the offence falls under Section 11 (1) of the MAQIS Act 2011 for importing fish without having a valid import permit and if convicted, could be fined not exceeding RM100,000 or imprisonment not more than six months or both.

She said her department was always committed in combating smuggling activities across the country's gateways, especially in Penang.

She added that the smugglers (of ornamental fish) were out to make huge profits.
