Remand extended for mastermind in Perlis Mufti's car torching incident

KANGAR, July 9 (Bernama) -- The four-day remand period of a widower, who was the last suspect believed to have been involved in the torching of Perlis Mufti Datuk Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin's official car, which ended today, has been extended by another two days until Thursday.
The 48-year-old suspect who did not have a permanent job was arrested at a house in Kampung Sekolah, Merbau Pulas, Kuala Ketil, Kedah at 4 am on July 6.
Kangar district police chief, Supt Wari Kiew said the police needed more time to investigate the suspect, believed to be the mastermind in the torching of Mohd Asri’s car at 5.45 am on March 22.
In the incident at the mufti's official home at Jalan Persiaran Wawasan, Seriab, the Perlis state-owned Honda Accord car’s engine was set on fire while several men smashed its front and rear windshields.
On March 23, police arrested a night market trader, Mohd Azimar Abd Razak, 36, who was charged at the Kangar Sessions Court on May 24 for burning the vehicle for which he claimed trial.
Mohd Azimar was charged under Section 435 of the Penal Code which was read with Section 34 of the Penal Code which provided for a maximum jail of 14 years and a fine upon conviction.
The other four suspects were released on police bail.
