Perak targets 10% increase in durian harvest

Last Update: 10/07/2019

BERUAS, July 9 (Bernama) -- The Perak Agriculture Department is targeting a 10 per cent increase in the state’s durian harvest for this year compared to last year's 29,659 tonnes, following an expansion of durian orchard clusters in areas such as Lenggong and Gerik in Hulu Perak.

Speaking to reporters today at the Beringin Fruit Valley orchard here, department director Nor Sam Alwi said another factor contributing towards the projected increase was last year's drought which had reduced the harvest.

Other areas featuring new orchard clusters include the districts of Manjung, Larut Matang and Selama.

State Public Facilities, Infrastructure, Agriculture and Plantations Committee chairman Abdul Yunus Jamahri said the state government believed the clusters of durian orchards possessed significant agro-tourism potential.
