Customs dept seizes RM1.1 million worth of smuggled cigarettes

TUMPAT, July 10 (Bernama) -- The Kelantan Customs Department seized various types of smuggled cigarettes worth RM1.1 million at a warehouse in Pengkalan Chepa on Sunday.

Its director Mohd Rakbi Mat Saud said that based on public information, a team from the Pengkalan Kubor Enforcement Branch raided the warehouse at 7.30 pm.

"The team found hundreds of boxes containing various brands of contraband cigarettes which were smuggled into the state for local market,” he told a press conference here today.

He said a 41-year-old man, who is the owner of the warehouse, was detained in connection with the seizure.

The department seized 9,450 cartons of cigarettes valued at RM151,200 with the potential duty evaded amounted to RM1.04 million, he added.
