Perlis FOA upgrade information on farmers

Last Update: 14/07/2019

PADANG BESAR, July 14 (Bernama) -- The Farmers’ Organisation Authority (FOA) of Perlis have been updating the details on all its 8,143 members to ensure they receive subsidised fertiliser from the government based on the true sizes of their padi fields, since early this year.

Its chairman Datuk Tengku Aziz Tengku Jaafar said that the programme, involving 11,950 ha of padi fields in Perlis, was proceeding well, and expected to be completed soon.

“According to the old record, there are farmers who claim they had five ‘relung, but in actual fact they only have three relung (one relung=0.28 ha). This is what we want to clean up,’’ he said.

Tengku Aziz, who is also a member of the National Farmers’ Organisation (NAFAS), was met by the media at a Perlis Farmers Reform programme at the Mata Ayer Area Farmers’ Organisation (AFO) here, today.

He also said that there were also farmers who declared their padi fields, on which houses or buildings had been put up, as still being used to plant padi merely to get subsidised fertilisers but then sold them to a third party.

Recently, the media reported that the lack of complete data on active farmers resulted in the government losing millions of ringgits each year due to leakages and abuse of the subsidised fertiliser distributed to farmers nationwide.
