KUALA TERENGGANU, July 16 (Bernama) -- Former director of Yayasan Bakti Negara Terengganu (YBNT) pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to cheating 26 people in umrah package, three years ago.
Mohd Adam Mohd Ghazali, 31, was charged with committing the offence by deceiving the victims, many of them teachers, to take the umrah package for the Nov to Dec 2016 session, which did not exist.
This prompted the victims into depositing money between RM3,000 and RM21,000, amounting to RM164,000 into the company's bank account.
Mohd Adam was alleged to have committed the offence at several premises including YBNT office in Jertih, Besut, as well as shopping centres and banks in Kuala Terengganu, Besut, Setiu, Hulu Terengganu, Dungun and Kemaman, between June 21 and Oct 25, 2016.
The charge, under Section 420 of the Penal Code, provides for imprisonment of up to 10 years and whipping, and a fine, upon conviction.
Judge Azimah Yaacob allowed Mohd Adam bail of RM40,000 with three sureties and set Aug 28 for mention.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Lishantini Munusamy appeared for the prosecution while Mohd Adam was represented by counsels Mohd Hayyatuddin Mohamad and Che Amir Che Musa.
