MMEA mobilises assets to search for missing fisherman

KUALA TERENGGANU, Aug 5 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA)) in Terengganu launched a search and rescue operation (SAR) this morning for a fisherman who is believed to be missing at sea.

Makhtar Ibrahim, 56, was fishing from a boat in an area about ??67.7 nautical miles from the Kuala Terengganu estuary when he is believed to have fallen into its waters at 5.30pm on Saturday.

Terengganu MMEA director, Maritime Captain Muhammad Suffi Mohd Ramli, said after receiving an emergency call from the boat skipper, he had mobilised personnel and assets in the form of vesels including KM Pekan, KM Gemia and aircraft assistance using a Bombardier for the operation.

"The operations coordinated by the MMEA was over an area covering ??386.5 nautical miles from the location of the incident.

"We also received help from KD Pahang, a vessel belonging to the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) for the operation," he said in a statement today.

Muhammad Suffi urged the people who wanted to carry out activities at sea to take heed of safety aspects such as the use of appropriate vests or jackets to avoid any unwanted incidents.
