Drug trafficking: Two women ordered to enter defence

GEORGE TOWN, Aug 20 -- The High Court here today ordered two women to enter their defence on a charge of trafficking in 294.9 grammes of heroin and monoacetylmorphine, three years ago.

Judge Akhtar Tahir held that the prosecution had succeeded in establishing a prima facie case against Zawani Zulkifli, 33 and Nur Zahirah Yusoff, 32, at the end of its case.

The court set Oct 1 for them to enter their defence.

Zawani and Nur Zahirah, who opted to give evidence under oath, are jointly accused of trafficking in 212.7 grammes of heroin and 82.2 grammes of monoacetylmorphines at a unit at Park View Tower, Jalan Harbour Place, Off Jalan Assumption, Seberang Perai Utara near here at 4.45 pm on Dec 18, 2016.

The charge, under Section 39B (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Yasinnisa Begam Seeni Mohideen prosecuted, while Zawani and Nur Zahirah were represented by lawyers V.Parthipan and Simon Murali respectively.
