Gojek: religious, legal aspects should be considered - Pahang Mufti

Last Update: 23/08/2019

KUANTAN, Aug 23 -- The proposed introduction of motorcycle-based ride-hailing services like Gojek to Malaysia should take into account the views of all quarters before it can be implemented, said Pahang Mufti  Datuk Seri Dr Abdul Rahman Osman.

He said among the things to be looked into were the religious and legal aspects of having such a service.

“If Gojek is approved, we hope motorcyclists offering the service will only take passengers of the same sex as them ... the male motorcyclist only takes male customers and vice versa.

“The matter is sensitive because in Islam, it is haram (sin) for a man to touch a woman who is not his muhrim ,”he said when contacted here. today.

He was referring to a provision under Section 35 of the Pahang Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment 2013  where it is an offence for any person who, contrary to Syariah law, acts or behaves in an indecent manner in any public place, including of a man and a woman, who are not mahram (are not married or do not have blood ties), riding a motorcycle together.

Last Tuesday, Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman suggested that the Gojek service be introduced in Malaysia as the move would help youths with motorcycles to earn income.

The proposal received various reactions and yesterday, the Cabinet gave the green light to implement the service, subject to viability studies and legal provisions.
