42 Malaysian and Indonesian students complete National Day rafting expedition

Last Update: 26/08/2019

GUA MUSANG, Aug 26 (Bernama) -- Forty-two students of Polytechnic of Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin (PSMZA) Dungun, Terengganu and Padang State Polytechnics (PNP) of West Sumatra, Indonesia today completed their three-day expedition along Sungai Nenggiri.

They started their journey on Saturday at Kampung Setawa, Kuala Betis and ended it at the Orang Asli Pos Pulat village after traversing 11 rapids and 68 km.

PSMZA Student Affairs Department head Yaswadi Mat Yasin said this was the first rafting expedition along Sungai Nenggiri involving students from the two polytechnics in conjunction with the National Day celebrations.

He said although they were not used to rafting on the river, they managed to cope with challenging rapids, namely Jeram Kalong, Jeram Manir, Jeram Gadin, Jeram Gelugur, Jeram Gelang Patah, Jeram Kerang and Jeram Mehmod.

He said the participants regarded it as a physical and mental challenge and were excited to fly the Jalur Gemilang national flag.

“The rafting expedition is not only for the fly-the-national flag mission but we also made stops at historic sites and mingled with indigenous people," he told reporters.

A student from PSMZA, Mohamad Khir Mohamad Fazeli Perkasa, 22, from Sarawak, said he was glad to participate in the programme for the first time.

"I almost could not believe I was able to face the challenge of going through the 11 rapids and complete the expedition," he said.

Another participant, Syerin Putri Tumizi, 20, from PNP, said it was a joy for her to join the expedition as part of the National Day celebrations.
