Trailer driver killed in crash near Menora Tunnel

Last Update: 29/08/2019

IPOH, Aug 29 -- A trailer driver was killed after the heavy vehicle he was driving collided with a four-wheel drive (4WD) at Kilometre 256.2 (north-bound) near the Menora tunnel on the North-South Expressway (PLUS) here today.

Kuala Kangsar district police chief ACP Razali Ibrahim said the victim, M.Lithiskumar, 32, died at the scene while the 4WD driver, Fong Wai Loon, 31 and co-passenger Chew Ga Vin, 30, sustained minor injuries.

He said preliminary investigations found that the gravel-laden trailer, travelling from Ipoh and headed Kuala Kangsar, was believed to have lost control at about 12.20pm and hit the rear of the 4WD in the slow lane next to it.

“The trailer then dragged the 4WD about 27.8 metres before it (trailer) flipped to its side and came to a stop, covering both lanes. The 4WD, meanwhile, turned turtle when it landed in the left lane drain,” Razali said when contacted by Bernama today.

Lithiskumar, who was flung out of the trailer, landed on the left lane shoulder and was pronounced dead at the scene. Fong and Chew were sent to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun hospital (HRPB) in Ipoh for further treatment.

Razali said the case was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Meanwhile, a Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said a distress call was received at 12.29pm before personnel from the Kuala Kangsar fire station rushed to the scene.

“Upon reaching the location, we found a man and woman being helped out of their vehicle by other highway users while the trailer driver had died at the scene.

“The victim's body was handed over to the police while the injured were taken to the hospital by ambulance,” he said, adding that the operation ended at 1.46pm.

PLUS meanwhile tweeted that the accident caused an eight-kilometre crawl on the south bound lanes and two kilometres in the opposite direction.
