Participation in SUTERA games in Terengganu to be expanded to other states
Last Update: 07/09/2019
KUALA NERUS, Sept 7 -- Inaugural sports competition Sukan Terengganu (SUTERA), which was launched yesterday, will be expanded in its next season due in 2021, to include more contingents from other states to develop more sporting talent from the grassroots across the country.
State Youth, Sports and Non-Governmental Organisation Development Committee chairman Wan Sukairi Wan Abdullah announced this to the media after the launch of the games at the Gong Badak Athletics Minis Stadium, here.
He said the SUTERA games which will be held every two years, in alternate frequency with the Sukma Games, may see a contingent from Pahang invited to the next games, with the possibility of sports teams from other states invited as well, if Terengganu's finances permit the same.
This year's games which began on Sept 5 and will last for one week, features the participation of 2,400 athletes in 13 different sports including cycling, netball, silat, sepak takraw, bowling, athletics, ping pong and volleyball.
The participants are from eight contingents within the state and one guest contingent from Kelantan.
On other developments, Wan Sukairi said it was decided at the state executive councillor's meeting two weeks ago that the establishment of the state’s sports institute (ISN) would take place at an appropriate time when the state's finances improve, as the cost to acquire high-tech training equipment was very expensive, at an estimated RM3 million.
