Muhammad Fauzi-Umar Al Farouk eye SEA Games gold

Last Update: 16/09/2019

KUANTAN, Sept  16  -- The national International 420 event sailing duo, Muhammad Fauzi Kaman Shah and Umar Al Farouk Mohd Zahawi have set their eyes on the Philippines 2019 SEA Games gold medal.

Muhammad Fauzi, who has been partnering Umar Al-Farouk for the last eight months, said the target was achievable based on their current performance at the local and international competition as well as their compatibility with each other.

"What is important is to focus on training and evaluate the mistakes made in previous tournaments as well as to learn from others’ experiences," he said when met by reporters at the closing and prize giving ceremony of the 7th KFC-Pahang Open Sailing Championship held at the Pahang Sailing Association (PPLP) Beach Recreational Centre in Beserah, today.

Muhammad Fauzi noted that the competition was also part of their preparations and to build confidence before competing in the 2019 SEA Games.

Besides the duo, the other national sailing athletes who will be participating at the 2019 SEA Games, were Putera Adrine Danish Mohd Puad and Ummu Nurdania Rozaini, who took part in the Optimist event.

The Malaysian Yachting Association (MYA) in June has targeted four gold medals from 12 events at the 2019 SEA Games.

Meanwhile, PPLP chairman Wan Abdul Razak Wan Mohamed said 142 athletes, including from Indonesia and Thailand competed in the three-day tournament which ended today.

"After it has been held for seven times, this is the first time foreign athletes participated in the tournament. We hope to receive more entries including from foreign athletes in the upcoming tournament.

"We also received an overwhelming response from them because the distance from the shore to the sea is not far, which is easier for them to pull their boats," he said.
