Life of Dr Shaharom Husain on exhibit at Muzium Tokoh Johor

JOHOR BAHRU, Sept 17 -- The life of exemplary teacher, historian, and cultural and letters figure, the late Dr Shaharom Husain will be exhibited at the Muzium Tokoh Johor (Johor Personalities Museum) here, beginning today.
Director of the Johor Heritage Foundation, Mohd Ekmaluddin Ishak said the “Shaharom Husain: Gapura Sastera dan Kolaborasi Ilmiah: Shaharom Husain” will be held for six months for the benefit of the public, especially the younger generation.
“Shaharom Husain was a Johor personality who should be emulated and upheld,” he said at the launch of the exhibition by Johor Lama state assemblyman Rosleli Jahari.
Also present was Shaharom’s eldest son, Prof Dr Mohamed Hatta, who is also chairman of the board of governors of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP).
Mohd Ekmaluddin said the artifacts of the exhibition spanned seven decades, including the books and journals Shaharom wrote, his personal effects, photographs, certificates, prized possessions, clothes, wedding clothes, convocation robes, camera collection and spectacles.
He said although Shaharom died in 2008, his spirit remained in the literary world through his writings which have been adapted into theatre productions and drama shows.
Born in Kampung Peserai, Batu Pahat in 1919, Shaharom died in Gombak, Selangor, in 2008 at the age of 88.
Using the pen names ‘Dharmaya’, ‘Mashhor Malaya’ and ‘Shabi’, his novels included ‘Hantu Laut’, ‘Si Bongkok Tanjung Puteri’, ‘Di Bawah Hujan Pelulu’, ‘Korban Sungai Muar’, ‘Jiwa Melarat’ and ‘Di Bawah Tikaman Garpu’.
