Penang Maqis seizes agricultural produce worth RM3.761 million

BUTTERWORTH, Sept 17 -- The Penang branch of the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (Maqis) seized 2,193 tonnes of agricultural produce worth RM3.761 million which were smuggled in from various countries at the North Butterworth Container Terminal here yesterday.
Its director Zarina Ramli said the goods were seized after checks on 90 containers found that they did not comply with the requirements of grading, packaging and labelling rules.
She said the seized items included onions, potatoes, broccoli, ginger, groundnuts and coffee beans.
"Maqis has also issued compounds amounting to RM353,000," she said here today.
The case is being investigated under Section 15 (1) of the Quarantine And Inspection Services Act 2011 for not complying with import requirements.
Zarina said the offence carries a maximum fine of RM100,000 or imprisonment not exceeding six years or both.
