Haze: fishermen in Kelantan advised to be careful

Last Update: 24/09/2019

KOTA BHARU, Sept 24 -- Fishermen in Kelantan have been advised to stay alert whenever they go out to sea during the current haze, as it can reduce visibility.

State Fisheries Department director Nazri Ishak said it was important to always remain cautious to avoid boat collision, thus reducing the loss of lives.

“If you're not careful, an accident can take place because the haze can result in poor visibility,” he said when contacted by Bernama here today.

Yesterday, the Air Pollutant Index (API) in Kota Bharu and Tanah Merah recorded unhealthy level with readings of 115 and 116 respectively.

However, Kelantan Department of Environment director Hamzah Mohamad said the API readings in Kota Bharu and Tanah Merah dropped to 88 and 98, respectively, as of 2 pm today.

Nazri also advised freshwater fish operators in the state to take precautionary measures such as reducing the distribution of fish seeds to reduce fish population density and avoid a decline in dissolved oxygen content in the pond.

“The use of equipment such as blower, paddle wheels or the latest technology to increase dissolved oxygen levels in the water is also important during the haze to prevent fish deaths,” he said.
