Indonesian crew member feared drowned in Penang waters

GEORGE TOWN, Sept 26  -- An Indonesian man is feared to have drowned after falling off the Mekar Jaya tanker in the waters off McCallum here today.

Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Penang director Maritime Captain Hamizan Harun said the agency was informed at 11.21 am that a crew member, identified as Agus, 24, had gone missing after falling into the sea.

"The ship had dropped anchor (about 0.2 nautical mile off here) when the incident happened, and MMEA and other several other agencies including the fire and rescue department immediately launched a search and rescue operation,” he said.

He said the fire and rescue department had set up a control post on Lebuh McCallum here to coordinate the operation.
