Last Update: 30/09/2019

TUMPAT, Sept 30  -- Police seized 34 smuggled heads of cattle from Thailand worth RM136,000 during a raid in Kampung Mentua, Pengkalan Kubur yesterday.

Tumpat police chief Supt Ab Rashid Mat Daud said the raid was carried out by officers and members of the General Operations Force (GOF) Battalion 7 and officers and personnel from the Tumpat Police Headquarters (IPD) at 11 pm last night.

“The raid was conducted after information from the public about cattle being smuggled in from the neighbouring country via the Malaysia-Thailand border.

As a result of the raid we managed to track down 34 cows heading for the local market,” he told reporters at the site of the raid here, today.

Ab Rashid said, in the raid, police also arrested a 38-year-old local man believed to be involved in the smuggling activity.

“The suspect claimed that the cattle belonged to him, to be marketed around the state.

“We found the cattle were made to swim from the river (border) located 900 metres from the site of the raid and then taken on foot before being kept in a pen,” he said.

Ab Rashid said a thorough investigation would be conducted into the falsification of documents and  so on.

“The case will be investigated under Section 11 (1) of the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011 and the suspect will be remanded for three days,” he added.
