Last Update: 05/10/2019

GEORGE TOWN, Oct 5 -- Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow will lead the state’s delegation to the 23rd World Congress on Information Technology (WCIT) 2019 in Yerevan, Armenia, from Oct 6 to 9, upon invitation by the government of the Republic of Armenia.

Chow will be accompanied by his special advisor who is also InvestPenang director Datuk Seri Lee Kah Choon, state executive councillor for Public Works, Utilities and Flood Mitigation Zairil Khir Johari, Penang Island Mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang and InvestPenang chief executive officer Datuk Loo Lee Lian.

According to the statement by Unit Penang2030, Chow will be highlighting his Penang2030 Vision, which aimed at transforming the state into a 'Family-Focused, Green and Smart State that Inspires the Nation'.

“The chief minister will also be engaging in several ministerial sessions with leaders from various countries during the WCIT2019. During the congress, attention will be focused on the promotion of Malaysia, particularly Penang, as the host of WCIT next year,  and to start recruiting delegates, database building and creating awareness.

“Penang will be hosting WCIT 2020, coined as the Olympics of the IT industry, from Sept 13 to 16, 2020 alongside the inaugural TechFest 2020 Penang, to be held both on Penang Island and Seberang Perai from Sept 11 to 20 next year,” according to the statement.

WCIT 2019 would be a great platform for the state government to educate delegates about Penang and Malaysia, and to offer insights of investing or exploring opportunities for market expansion here, as well as to engage with other countries to participate in WCIT 2020.

With the theme 'The Power of Decentralisation: Promise and Peril', the WCIT 2019 sees the participation of over 2,000 delegates from more than 70 countries.

Among the key topic that would be covered in the congress are internet-of-things (IoT), smart cities, FinTech, e-commerce and climate change.
