Kelantan govt to explain rationale behind food premises operating hours

Last Update: 23/10/2019

KOTA BHARU, Oct 23 -- The Kelantan government through the local authorities will give briefings on the need to limit the operating times of food premises until midnight before implementing the rule next year.

Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah said with the explanation given, the people and traders in the state would be aware of the objectives of the regulation.

"The rule that businesses can only operate until midnight and no activities can be conducted until 6am had been established long ago.

"Its just that no enforcement action had been taken even though the Kota Bharu Municipal Council (MPKB) had issued a circular on the matter in 2015," he told reporters after an exco meeting at the Kota Darul Naim Complex here today.

Mohd Amar said the proposal to limit the operating hours is still at the policy level and the local authorities would make more in depth study on its implementation by taking into account premises operating 24 hours including 7 Eleven, KFC and Wakaf Che Yeh wholesale market.

Mohd Amar said the proposal to limit the operating hours is still at the policy level and the local authorities would make more in depth study on its implementation taking into account premises operating 24 hours including 7 Eleven, KFC and Wakaf Che Yeh wholesale market.

He said tourists visiting Kelantan should also be aware of this regulation which he said had been practiced in most developed countries.

"Eating late at night is also not good for health. We should be resting and spending our time with the family and there is no necessity to go out at such hours,” he said.

He said the move to implement the regulation also took into consideration the views of the police that the operating hours of food premises was among factors contributing to social problems in the state.

In another development, Mohd Amar said the Kelantan government would support all measures to tackle several Malaysia-Thailand border security issues and would give their full cooperation to the authorities including the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

"We do admit that smuggling activities are happening everywhere especially at the border areas ... we take this matter seriously and will always give full cooperation to the authorities," he said.
