Exclusive report by Nur Adila Abdul Wahab

KEPALA BATAS, Oct 23 -- A lecturer at the Kepala Batas Community College has invented an anti-car theft and child alert device to prevent carjacking and break-ins as well as incidents of leaving children in the rear seat of a car.

Mohd Zaki Abdul Manap, 43, a manufacturing technology lecturer, invented the device with the help of three of his students.

He said the device, which combines the usage of the Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, would alert the motorist on any movement in the car through a mobile phone application known as  'MIT Inventor'.

Mohd Zaki said the device, which had been developed since last year, had undergone various improvements and it was initially using Bluetooth technology for short-range detection.

He told Bernama that it took them three months to upgrade the device, which fully completed in July, by adding various components including passive infra red sensor, Global System for Mobile communication, global positioning system, car siren and LCD screen worth RM600.

"Users only need to activate the app by downloading it to their phone and the sensor is placed in the car to enable it to function,” he said.

Mohd Zaki said the invention had won a gold medal at the recent Macao International Innovation and Invention Expo 2019.

The invention also won the overall champion at the New Horizon Competition of Creative and  Innovative Group at Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah Polytechnic in August and the double gold awards at the Creative Invention Award at Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) last year.
