Female Chinese national pleads not guilty to drunk driving

GEORGE TOWN, Oct 29  -- A female Chinese national pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate’s Court here today  to a charge with driving under the influence of alcohol that resulted in a road crash which killed a motorcyclist last Friday.

Liu Shasha, 25, made the plea after the charge was read out in Mandarin before Magistrate Rosnee Mohd Radzuan.

She was charged with committing the offence, which resulted in the death of  Penang City Council (MBPP) employee Mohaidin Gani Mohamad, 58, at Jalan Datuk Keramat at about 6.25 am on Oct 25.

The charge, under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act, provides an imprisonment for up to 10 years, if found guilty.

Deputy public prosecutor Nabila Huda Muhammad Nazim prosecuted, while Liu was represented by lawyer P. Ashokumar.

The court set Nov 8 for mention.

In the same court, Liu’s friend, Lim Nian Siang, 23, who is the owner of the Honda Accord car that was  involved in crash, pleaded guilty to a charge with allowing Liu to drive the car without a valid driving licence.

Lim, who is a cook and was in the front passenger seat of the car when the crash occurred,  was fined RM1,500 for the offence.
