UNDERGROUND DAM CONSTRUCTION PROJECT IN KEDAH AT TENDER PROCUREMENT STAGE

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 11 (Bernama) -- The underground dam construction project in Padang Matsirat, Langkawi, Kedah, to increase the capacity of the raw water supply source is now at the tender procurement stage.

Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said the Letter of Acceptance (SST) for the project is expected to be issued in the second quarter of next year.

"Involving an allocation of RM412.8 million, this project was approved to enhance the capacity of the raw water supply. The underground dam, with a capacity of 42.8 million cubic metres, is projected to contribute an additional 40 million litres per day (MLD)  of water supply until 2040," he said.

He was responding to a question from Dr Muhammad Taufiq Johari (PH-Sungai Petani) regarding the project during the question and answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today.

For a short-term solution to the raw water supply issue in Kedah,  Akmal Nasrullah said the Pumping System Improvement Project in Padang Matsirat was completed on May 20 this year.

He said the project was able to increase the pumping rate of raw water to the Phase Three Padang Saga Water Treatment Plant, whereby raw water can now be channelled directly to Malut Dam to supplement the existing water supply.

Apart from that, he said, the ministry was also planning to implement the Riverside Water Reservoir Project (TAPS) in Padang Saga.

The SSWT for the project is expected to be issued in May next year, he added.
