Malaysia elected as Statistical Institute council member - DoSM

KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will be part of a council that governs the Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (SIAP) for the term 20222024 following an election among Asia Pacific member countries in Bangkok on May 24, 2022, the Department of Statistics, Malaysia (DoSM) said.

SIAP is a professional statistical training centre for government officials from developing countries and has been assisting developing countries and other parts of the world to develop human resources.

DoSM's chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin will represent Malaysia as the council member.

In addition to host country Japan, the current elected governing council members are Bangladesh, China, India, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea, Thailand dan Vietnam, the statement said.

The election to the council is a testament of the international community’s recognition and confidence in Malaysia's support and advacement of human capital in the Asia-Pacific region.

During its term, Malaysia plans to prioritise constructive engagement, cooperation and transparency to accelerate human capital development nationally and globally, the statement said.

Malaysia will work closely with United Nations SIAP to build statistical capacity and to develop qualified professionals in member countries in order to produce timely and quality statistics for inclusive and sustainable economic development.

Mohd Uzir Mahidin pledged to work with council members to advocate the global agenda in areas such as the environment, climate change, food security, Big Data, and others.

"We will work with SIAP to fulfil the trust given us,” he said.
