Global hydrogen demand to grow up to 600 mln metric tonnes by 2050 -- expert

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 3 (Bernama) -- Global hydrogen demand is expected to grow significantly between 150 and 600 million metric tonnes by 2050, from 90 million metric tonnes consumed in 2020, said an energy expert.

WRI India senior programme associate for e-mobility and hydrogen, Anuraag Nallapaneni said the demand for hydrogen production will be based on the various climate change scenarios around the globe.

“A simulation by the World Economic Forum shows us that the climate scenarios include high ambition scenario (under 1.8°C of global warming); medium ambition scenario (1.8 to 2.3°C); and low ambition scenario (a global warming potential of greater than 2.3°C).

“Post-2030, the higher ambition scenario of global warming will see stronger hydrogen demand,” he said during a panellist session at the virtual Hydrogen Asean 2022 Summit today.

He said within the next three decades, hydrogen demand will primarily come from China, India and the United States, while smaller countries including most Asean countries are expected to also contribute to the upcoming demand.

“It is critical to ensure that the hydrogen demand from these countries is addressed through the production of low-carbon hydrogen,” he said.

According to Anuraag, if the decarbonisation process happening around the globe does not factor in hydrogen demand, the industry will still rely on natural gas-based hydrogen production which will result in more carbon emissions in future.

He highlighted that the application of hydrogen demand in today’s environment is mostly for power and oil refining processes, as well as for ammonia production usages.

“Nevertheless, we foresee many new applications for hydrogen that are expected to come up over the next couple of decades, including for international shipping, rail transport and other sectors,” he noted.

In the meantime, Anuraag underscored the importance for the Asean region to have low-cost renewable energy (RE) output in order to ensure its energy security is sustained.

“The coupling of hydrogen and RE is necessary to enhance the indigenous green energy supply in order to improve energy security in the Asean region.

“Asean leaders can encourage hydrogen adoption by demonstrating a strong commitment to promoting a hydrogen society by developing a clear strategy investment policy for hydrogen development and adoption,” he said.
