StanChart appoints Mak Joon Nien as new MD & CEO

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia (StanChart) announced the appointment of Mak Joon Nien as its new managing director (MD) and chief executive officer (CEO) effective today.

It said Mak, the bank's first Malaysian CEO, will take over the reins from Abrar A. Anwar and will report to cluster CEO, Singapore and ASEAN markets, Patrick Lee.

"Abrar will remain as a board member of Standard Chartered Malaysia until the end of the year to ensure a smooth and orderly transition.

“He will also be supporting several regional initiatives within the bank," it said.

StanChart also noted that Patricia Wong will be succeeding Mak as head of client coverage corporate, commercial and institutional banking (CCIB) Malaysia, who will be double-hatting as regional head of global subsidiaries, ASEAN.

Meanwhile, Lee said Malaysia remains an important market for StanChart and the bank is committed to growing the franchise with focus on network businesses, sustainable finance, affluent, and digital mass retail segments.

"I am pleased to welcome Mak to his new role and am confident that his leadership skills, coupled with his extensive industry experience and sharp client focus will further drive our business strategy and performance in Malaysia.

"I am equally delighted to strengthen the bank’s leadership with Wong helming the CCIB client coverage business which will benefit from her global experience," he said.
