KOTA KINABALU, Sept 26 (Bernama) -- The 46th Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM) of the informal annual meeting of the Ministers of Religion of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore (MABIMS) here, should be used as a forum to formulate initiatives to improve the economic status of Muslims in member countries, says Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

He said it was especially important after the COVID-19 pandemic that had also affected the global economy.

"Economic development plays an important role in driving the growth of a country. This meeting is a very important forum to discuss the issues and challenges for Muslims among MABIMS countries, including economic aspects," he said at the dinner in conjunction with the 46th SOM MABIMS Meeting here tonight where the guest of honour was Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri, Tun Juhar Mahiruddin.

The 46th SOM MABIMS will last for three days beginning tomorrow and will be attended by 29 delegations from the four member countries.

"It is my fervent hope that this meeting will further strengthen unity and make Muslims in MABIMS member countries a progressive ummah, who love peace and harmony," said Hajiji who added that the meeting was also crucial to strengthening cooperation.

Also present at the dinner was Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Idris Ahmad who said: "Leaders change but the goals and direction of MABIMS remain firmly based on the strategic plan that has been drawn up, as well as to face the current challenges in building well-being and prosperity, in line with Islam."
